SCIENCE CLUB

November 2015
The Science Club activity in November is entitled "The Solar System - the Sun and the planets : The Inner Solar System".

The students will make an imaginary tour of the Inner Solar System and discover the four terrestrial planets which are similar to Earth in size, mass and composition.

They will learn new things that will make them able to understand why life exists only on Earth.

They will discover the Sun's role in holding the Solar System together and  the main characteristics of each of the four planets, the things that make each of them unique.

December 2015

The Science Club activity in December is entitled "The Solar System - the Sun and the planets: the Outer Solar System".

The imaginary journey through the Solar System continues. The students will discover the outer planets which are very different from Earth. They will be able to recognize each planet or moon by its unique and identifiable features and they will understand the structure of the universe and the Earth's place in it.

They will write planet research reports and they will make an activity book on the Solar System as well as a model of our solar System.

January 2016

The Science Club activity is entitled "Sun and Earth: Earth's core and Earth's electromagnetic shield"

Students will gain an understanding of Earth's magnetic field and they will be able to explain its relationship to life on Earth. They will understand the concepts and terms associated with magnetism and space weather and thus they will begin to understand the magnetosphere and its role in protecting life on our planet.

Students will conduct scientific experiments and write reports. They will investigate the effects of magnets on the needle of a compass and compare them to the effects of Earth's magnetic field on the needle of a compass. They will use science process and thinking skills and they will be able to communicate effectively using science language and reasoning.

February 2016

This month's activity is entitled "Sun and Earth: Gravity; Sun's effects on Earth".

Students will understand the concepts of gravity, mass, weight and they will learn that every object exerts gravitational force on every other object and this force depends on the mass of the objects and their distance from one another.

Students will be able to calculate the effects of gravitational force on planets, to describe and demonstrate how objects in a state of free fall are accelerated by gravity at an equal rate. They will experiment with various objects observing how gravity affects those objects, thus extending their understanding of the concept through experimentation.

Students will also be able to describe the Sun's effects on Earth and the way it influences the weather and the climate on our planet.

March 2016

This month's activity is entitled "Seasons: causes and effects".

Students can relate to seasons in the way they have experienced them in their home country. They will use the knowledge they gathered during the previous activities of the Science Club, more specifically their notions about the relative size, motion and distance of the Sun, Moon and the Earth to understand the phenomena of seasons.

They will be able to explain how the relationship between the tilt of Earth's axis and its yearly orbit around the Sun produces the seasons. They will understand that this tilt affects the angle of incidence of sunlight and because of that it is responsible for the seasons, as different angles of incidence affect surface heating.

They will learn that different parts of the Earth receive direct rays from the Sun at different times of the year and, at any given time, the northern and the southern hemisphere experience opposite seasons.

Students will make observations, they will collect, record and analyze data and recognize the relevance of science in everyday life. They will construct and use models and explain how parts of a system are interconnected.

They will be able to explain scientific terms such as solstice, equinox, polar night, polar day and they will write essays.

April 2016

This month's activity is entitled "Seasons around the world".

Students will learn about different seasons and different types of weather in different regions of the world. In temperate regions generally four calendar based seasons are recognized: spring, summer, autumn and winter while in some tropical or subtropical regions it is more common to speak of the rainy season versus the dry season. Students should observe that seasons happen in the same cycles year after year and that different types of weather occur during different seasons.

They will learn about various climates of different regions of the world and how they relate to weather patterns and they will gain an insight into the variations in climate around the world. They will be able to demonstrate the basic causes of weather patterns as well as what causes weather to change.

Students will learn about various aspects of weather and share them with the class, thus learning from each other. They will draw or interpret maps, images and climate charts and write various essays.

May 2016

This month's activity is entitled "Natural phenomena which occur during autumn and winter".

Students will learn that water in the atmosphere falls back to Earth as precipitation. They will be able to recognize daily changes in weather, including clouds, precipitation, temperature, they will identify states of matter as solids, liquids and gases and they will describe evaporation, condensation and precipitation in the water cycle.

This month students will study the types of precipitation that are most common during autumn and winter, making connections between types of precipitation and temperature.

They will discuss the different types of precipitation using various pictures as visual aids. They will be able to describe each type of precipitation and explain how people respond to them.

They will be able to explain the similarities and differences between rain, sleet, snow, wet snow and freezing rain and they will develop an understanding of how each precipitation forms, making connections to the weather in a particular place and time. They will make weather observations and use data to explore weather phenomena.

June 2016

This month's activity is entitled "Natural phenomena which occur during spring and summer".

Students will continue their study of precipitation and learn about rain, thunderstorms, lightening, hail and heat waves. They will understand how weather affects their lives on a daily basis and be able to use weather reports for their personal benefit.

October 2016

This month's activity is entitled "Precipitation-related phenomena".

Students will identify the steps in the water cycle, define evaporation and condensation and relate this information to cloud and precipitation formation. They will observe weather conditions and discover weather-related concepts and phenomena in their immediate environment.

November 2016

This month's activity is entitled "Autumn in Europe".

Students will explain the causes of the different climates found in Europe, describe their location and understand what happens during autumn and what there is to do during this season.

December 2017

This month's activity is entitled "Natural phenomena - weather fronts, air masses, temperature inversions".

Students will describe the characteristics of air masses and explain how they get these characteristics, discuss what happens when air masses meet and list the differences between stationary, cold, warm and occluded fronts.

January 2017

This month's activity is entitled "Winter in Europe".

Students will make weather observations and use data to explore the winter natural phenomena which occur in Europe, as well as in their immediate environment. They will interpret maps, images and climate charts and understand what happens during the coldest season of the year and what there is to do during this season.

February 2017

This month's activity is entitled "Storms, tropical storms, cyclones, hurricanes."

Students will learn how tornadoes, hurricanes and typhoons are formed and how they are rated according to intensity. They will explore various topics about tropical storms, including where they occur most frequently, what kind of damage they cause and how they are predicted.

March 2017

This month's activity is entitled "Spring in Europe".

Students will make weather observations, study and interpret maps, images, climate charts and they will understand and describe the natural phenomena which occur in spring.

April 2017

This month's activity is entitled "Physical phenomena".

Students will learn about the water cycle and the forces that drive it and they will understand the processes that take place in moving water through Earth's systems.

They will study different parts of the water cycle, including evaporation, condensation and precipitation and find out why they should conserve water, an important natural resource.

May 2017

This month's activity is entitled "Summer in Europe".

Students will explore the summer natural phenomena which occur in Europe, as well as in our country. They will study and interpret maps and climate charts and understand what happens during the hottest season of the year and what there is to do during summer.
